Mobile Device QR login code that can be used always

We are 1:1 iPads and to have a QR code that works daily, especially for our littles, would be so helpful.  Every time they have to type our district and then type their username and password.

I think the idea of giving the (really) littles to have a permanent QR code for their families or teacher to keep printed and in a safe place is a nice idea. I can see teachers having a binder of QR codes to simplify the sign-in process - especially in a classroom with shared devices - or a family having it posted on the refrigerator.

Just keep those QR codes safe!

Would this be something that could be enabled at the sub-account or course level? Could an admin possibly generate these in bulk like pairing codes? That would be an awesome single-item document.

Kristin, if that's the case, Instructure should partner with a trusted ID card provider to allow institutions to create Student ID Cards with the Canvas Mobile QR code placed anywhere on the front or back.

After scanning the QR code, a pop-up will appear to confirm the student's name. The student will be asked to confirm or cancel the login by using biometrics.

A confirmation and biometric authentication after scanning the code is needed, because:

  • Scanning the wrong ID card can cause you to access the student profile that might not be yours. In some cases, that student might not have the same classes as you do.
  • What if you accidentally start a quiz on the wrong profile by mistake? This could cause problems with academic integrity.

The idea of permanent QR code will be very useful.

Our students are people with intellectual disabilities and logging in correctly is a big problem for most of them. Each iPad is shared between multiple students and many of them still require assistance even after months of logging in.

The password inputs are all hidden and it makes it more challenging for them to even noticed if they had keyed in a wrong character. Most of them also have shaky hands which adds to this problem.

Our trainers assist the class of 10 to log in daily and it usually takes about 10 minutes just to get all 10 of them logged in correctly. We are actually losing a few hours of productive time every day with the time spent just for logging in.

If the permanent QR Code Login method were to be implemented, we would expect time savings would be cut down dramatically.

To expand on the idea of QR Codes for students to create for themselves to log in to the Canvas Student App,  Our K-2 teachers would love to have a page where they could go to print out a class set of QR codes for each of their students to have posted on their desk to use on a daily basis throughout the school year.

We use Canvas K-12, and while we are close to 1-to-1, some of our younger grades aren't quite there yet, which means sharing iPads and logging in/out.  As you can imagine, this can be chaotic with our K-2 students.  I would love to see Canvas develop a static QR code login that teachers or students could print and tape inside their folders and make login easier for our littlest learners.  Our teachers are trying in earnest to use Canvas at that age, and have developed some great resources, but difficult logins are a roadblock to their success.

Hoping to bring this up a bit higher -- having a non-typing-dependent means of logging into Canvas is pretty essential for young learners who barely know how to spell, let alone are familiar with your standard QWERTY keyboard. QR codes should be printable by Canvas admins, and should be persistent so that teachers can easily help students log in. Most apps that are designed with emerging readers in mind (like Seesaw) have this type of functionality built in. The Canvas for Elementary theming is a step in the right direction, but getting the students access to Canvas app is hampered by the challenge of actually completing the log in process. I am hoping this feature request can be made reality soon.
