Move or Delete Incorrectly Submitted Assignments

Move or Delete Incorrectly Submitted Assignments

(49)
If a student submits an assignment to say week 2 folder when it should have been submitted to week 3, currently there is no way to move that assignment to the correct location as the Teacher.  This core functionality exists in all other LCS.LMS and should be considered for inclusion in Canvas's core modules.

I really hope this gets incorporated into Canvas. It has been such a hassle for me this semester.

We had exactly the same issue :

we had a student that incorrectly submitted an extension request form that contained some sensitive health information.  We needed to delete this and the instructor had to request to the faculty admin, they then put in a request to me (learning technologist) and then I requested from Canvas.  Canvas then had to have confirmation from my manager.  Meanwhile this document was visible in speedgrader for all instructors to see and causing some distress to the student.  I think that instructors should have the right to delete submissions when required.

Our institution just adopted Canvas this fall. And I had my first instance yesterday of students submitting a lab report to the wrong assignment. So it makes it difficult to keep track of my grades properly. And so I went searching for the answer and found this thread, which basically says there is no solution yet, even though it was brought up a few years ago. I agree with several posters who say that this is not a "feature,"--as in, something special, but rather should be just a standard part of the software--sort of a no brainer. Just like having wheels on a car is not a "feature." Not trying to be negative here, just realistic.  I think every teacher has students who submit to the wrong folder. So I voted for this and I hope it gets prioritized.

I agree.  I've been using Canvas for one week and already I need this fix.

Just adding to this.  We've just discovered that when an assignment is muted, the student doesn't have access to the Turnitin report (we encourage formative use prior to submission rather than just using it as a punitive tool only by the academic).  This means we'll have to set up separate Draft assignments for the students to access, which gives them another workflow to think about (not the easiest solution) and will increase the risk of them making submission errors ('I thought I'd submitted - but it was in the Draft').  So that seems to be something that is forced upon us by the platform - and yet we don't that the means to resolve that - because Instructure does not seem willing to develop a solution for us to move a submission to the correct assignment (preferable) or delete a submission?

Instructors or at least admins need the ability to delete assignment submissions! Aside from the use-cases already noted here, it would be very helpful for demos. I'm doing a Turnitin demo on Friday, and just ran through the demo as a test and now I can't reset by deleting the assignment submission as anticipated. It's now a lot more work to set things back to run the demo again...

I have recently been introduced to Canvas.  I am planning on going back to a paper grade book and paper assignments.  If I do not have the ability to move assignment submissions to a different folder / assignment area, it's not worth the effort.  For an instructor to  get the student to resubmit, when I can just move the assignment myself is foolish at best and a poor use of both my and my student's time.

I followed the thread all the way to 2011.  By the lack to movement on this issue by Canvas, it is apparent the the answer is  "You Can't".

Classroom management on computer is supposed to be an enhancement, not an impediment.

Having to wait for students to resubmit tasks in the correct spot is time consuming and valuable learning time is lost.  We can still direct them to submit correctly for the next assignment.  I'd really like to see this feature.

I agree completely,  @rachel_page , and this is related to a similar feature idea of being able to submit on behalf of a student.  Feel free to like that one too!

As an Instructor, I need the ability to delete an incorrect student submission. This is a mess.

I can't believe this is still a thing we're not able to do. Students need to be able to delete submissions  AND Teachers need to be able to delete submissions for a variety of reasons. We also need the ability to submit an assignment on a student's behalf in case they are having technical issues and emailed it to us instead..but want to use the handy speedgrader to grade it and log the assignment for the student. How do we get this ball rolling, does there need to be a new submission request??? it's open for voting and has over 200 votes.

There should be some kind of secure front-end access (for Canvas admins only) to remove submission content that was uploaded by mistake and contains confidential info or PII.  This came up last week in one of our schools, and while the "solution" of reaching out to Instructure support was adequate and didn't take too long, it was far from perfect, especially considering the age of, and support for, this feature.

Instructure support can resolve this as I discovered last week in a very similar circumstance.  Still, the "solution" was odd and the extra steps to contact them seemed unnecessary given the urgency.  And I can't imagine this is a rare occurrence.

I serve as an instructional technology specialists and this is the only LMS I know of that does not allow this feature - or at least the ability to move student's work. This is an issue that needs attention. We pay SO much for this product only to be frustrated. Canvas could easily fix this issue.

It would be nice if the student submitted an assignment in the assignment that I can just move to the correct folder.

This is a no brainer as are lots of Canvas suggestions. Not new features, but rather bug fixes. I can’t believe that it has been around since 2011 and not fixed. A lot of these bug fixes don’t seem like they’d require all that much work to implement. I don’t think bug fixes ought to require a certain percentage of vote.

This needs to be fixed.

Perhaps an alternative to deleting a submission, would be archiving the submission.  That way all content is preserved but all indicators that a correct submission is still pending would be functional.

In fact, I just found an idea that basically proposes that archiving: https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/15494-flag-an-assignment-in-speedgrader-when-the-wrong-file-wa...
