The icon for InBox Mail/messages at far left in Canvas looks like a printer, not mail. Here's a simple envelope that will help people quickly find the InBox Mail/messages without confusion. Should be a piece of cake for you to update.
Thanks for sharing this idea. As it moves forward for further discussion, please know that Canvas admins for each school/instance can change the global navigation menu icons with custom CSS. You might want to contact the local admin to ask whether this is a design change they'd like to implement for your organization.
