New Quizzes Grading Indication

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

New Quizzes Grading

New Quizzes allows mixed question formats which could result in some questions being auto graded and some needing manual grading. In the grade book, using Speedgrader, there is no indicator of what is fully graded and what is not unless you use the moderator on each student and view the attempts. Our idea was to have the Green check mark for fully graded quizzes, a Yellow dot for partially graded and a Red dot for ungraded that shows in the  Student Drop down list where you can currently see the Green check mark. Instructors often have to step away and it would a benefit if they can quickly see where they left off and return to grading.

The colors are fine... ANYTHING is better than what we have now

I held off switching to new quizzes for as long as possible because of this bug, but unfortunately, time is running out. There are some genuine improvements in new quizzes, but it is inexcusable to start moving everybody away from old quizzes before this is fixed.

Tip for those of us with larger classes:

Download your gradebook before you start any manual grading, then download it again when you think you are done, and compare the scores. No difference means either a 0 on the manual grading portions or ungraded. In my case, (worked out calculations uploaded as an image) actual 0's are pretty rare except for students who just skip the problem, but even with legitamate 0's mixed in, it's helps to narrow down the search list to check for overlooked grading.

If you have more than one manual grade problem, you'd probably want to download and compare between grading each problem.

Great idea - there needs to be some way for the faculty member to know the status of the assignment.

@KristinL  I would call this a partial fix.  It shows the student their quiz grade with ungraded essay responses given 0 points.  Not terribly reassuring to the student.  Classic quizzes shows no grade.cq.png

@KristinL I am also having problems seeing this as completed. The partial solution in the release notes is not going to do anything to reduce the number of inbox messages I received before I've even graded. 😀

Hi @dhulsey and @hesspe -- I'll connect with our Release Specialist and Product Team to verify. Thank you for commenting and bringing this to our attention.

Hi @hesspe  Thank you for your screenshot. I reached out to our product team and they attempted to replicate the behavior you have shared, but we were not able to experience the same behavior. The icon indicator is not intended to show any score, only that a grade is needed. When the New Quiz has been graded, then a grade will appear to replace the icon. We recommend reaching out to support so that we can gather more information from you and investigate further.

Hi @dhulsey  The icon indicator will not necessarily reduce the notifications, but share that the New Quiz has not yet been graded so users are not seeing a partial score as in the past.

If you have any additional questions, please @mention me so I can follow-up easily. I’d be happy to collaborate further.
