[New Quizzes] Include availability dates to review feedback

As I understand it, “New Quizzes” in Canvas is NOT designed to allow students to receive feedback on an essay exam with LockDown Browser. (This functionality is apparently present in Classic Quizzes in Canvas.) This lack of functionality (not being able to provide students with feedback on essay exams without going in and changing LockDown Browser to have new availability dates) is a MAJOR DESIGN FLAW, in my opinion. How can students learn from/improve in taking essay exams if they are not able to see feedback from the instructor? How, then, would an instructor provide feedback to each student? Multiple choice exams provide students with feedback (letting them know which answers are the correct ones). The “New Quizzes” in Canvas MUST be designed in such a way that it is easy to provide students feedback with LockDown Browser on essay exams!
It would seem to be a very simple fix to designate a window of time for taking the (essay) exam and then add have an option that indicates a (second) time period for viewing exam results and seeing the instructor feedback. It is clumsy to make the instructor have to go back and edit the exam options to change the availability date (from the time the exam is to be taken to a new date for when it can be reviewed).

Hi @shooper -

Intructure's Product Team would like to learn more about your Idea!

If you would, please answer these questions:

  1. Do you access canvas only through the lockdown browser at all times?
  2. Are the due dates and lock at dates set for the same time or set for different times?
  3. New quizzes has the ability to set feedback to be seen (or not seen) between times separate from the availability dates. Have those been set or have those not been set? (these are accessed from the settings page and are under "restrict student feedback").

Thank you! We look forward to collaborating!

  1. For essay exams, the instructor always uses lockdown browser - for the exam and for feedback.
  2. There is only one set of dates available to set for a New Quiz. Classic quizzes had two sets of dates to set - one for the exam and one for feedback
  3. New quizzes does not have the ability to set a separate window of time to view feedback. There is a setting "restrict student feedback", however there is not a place to put dates to view the feedback. You can only select what you would like the student to be able to view in regards to feedback. This is only available in classic quizzes.

Thanks for all of you questions. I look forward to collaborating.

To expand on this - Having the window that could be set in Canvas was helpful within Classic but the most ideal solution would be to be able to set a window of time for each student or a group of students or a section of students to view their results. It being all of nothing is not ideal since you may have different times you want to turn on the results for student view but you don't need or want ALL students to be able to review the results, just a set of students or individual students who you are monitoring so they aren't taking pictures or writing down answers to share with others. Please consider adding windows of time that can be limited to individuals/sections/groups to allow results to be viewed by those students during that set window of time only.
