When clicking on a student name, there could be a drop down (or other method) to immediately go to beginning a message to the student. This should be wherever the student name is visible throughout Canvas, but ESPECIALLY in the people page.
You'll be happy to know that this is already possible. When a teacher clicks on a student's name from anywhere in Canvas, the student context card for that student displays to the right in a modal. The teacher can send a message directly from the context card modal by clicking on the envelope icon. This is detailed in How do I view a context card for a student in a course?
As this is existing functionality, we've archived the idea.
Please reopen and make this feature work for STUDENTS to message each other. They should be able to go to their course, click People, and message directly from that link rather than taking the much longer route through the Inbox.
This now-archived request is specific to instructor functionality. The ability of students to send messages to other students is a permission that is set by the school. If your school already allows students to message one another, please ask your Canvas admin if they'd like to write and submit a request that would allow students to message one another within their courses from the People tab, i.e. without having to navigate to the Canvas Inbox to do so.
