Partial Credit for Multiple Choice Questions

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

It is sometimes nice to be able to assign partial credit for multiple choice questions.

Example:

Which musicians were members of The Who in the 1970s?

A) Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, John Entwistle     (worth .75)

B) Pete Townshend, Roger Daltrey, Keith Moon, John Entwistle    (worth 1)

C) Pete Seeger, Roger Daltrey, Elton John, John McCartney         (worth .5)

D) Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Charlie Watts, Ronnie Wood         (worth 0)

I am also a nursing instructor and the licensing exam does NOT allow partial credit for select all that apply questions. It is a disservice to our students to allow partial credit on exams.

The current format is both time consuming and burdensome.

We need to regrade every test and students see an artificially high score with partial credit. We now mute the exams, but that causes anxiety while they wait for their grade.

The industry standard is "all or nothing". Why does Canvas have a differerent standard?
