Separate permission to allow teachers to change their name

(1)

Currently the setting "Users can edit their name" applies to ALL users.  I would like to request to split that permission out to "Teachers can edit their name" and "Students can edit their name".  We have a number of staff, especially for Elementary teachers, where they would like to be see as Mrs. Smith instead of Karen Smith.  This setting change would give us flexibility to allow teachers to make such edits, while allowing us to prevent students from changing their names, where that can get pretty interesting as to what they would change them to Smiley Happy

Hi,  @doug_greenholt ‌, since one of the use cases is to accommodate the addition of an honorific or title, here's another idea for your consideration: https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/15235-user-name-prefixsuffix-fields

As simple as this Idea sounds. It's actually not for HE as we have adjuncts who are both teachers and students. So, I'm not going to vote this up or down, just ask that people take that into consideration.

Also, please take into consideration that some schools (K12 and HE) have teachers with the same last name and the first name helps students differentiate between teachers. Though, it is also possible those people could share the same  first initial or first name. Smiley Happy

Thanks for the input - That is why I have 2 separate options, that way HE can select both, and those in K12 that would use this can select just the teacher option.

Unfortunately, that's now how their User system works. A person (generally) has one user account (unless their institution has done something like creating two per user with separate logins that the person is to not merge --an option available if you have multiple accounts tied to the same email). Then you are enrolled into a section as either a Teacher, TA, Designer, Student, or anything else your institution has created.

When you edit the "name" field (on your Settings page) it edits it for ALL sections you are enrolled in no matter the ROLE you have.

Canvas would need to look at a user's Role in a section and then decide what to show only for that section.

[A lot of schools, even K12, have moved knowledge bases and training into their Canvas installations. So, even in K12 a teacher could be a student.]

It will all depend on how Canvas designs and applies the option.
