[New User Tutorial] Split New User Tutorial and Browser Full Width

The New User Tutorial feature also removes the maximum width setting of Canvas to expand to the full width of the browser, removing the pesky white space. Why these two features are tied together makes no sense.

Can the New User Tutorial and the Canvas Maximum Width setting be split making two separate settings?

I don't want to mess with the CSS or Javascript to make this happen. It just seems silly to me that they are combined together.

Problem statement:

The content area is constrained even when a window is larger than 1450 px when the New User Tutorial Feature Option is DISABLED. The only way to realize full screen width is to ENABLE the New User Tutorial.

  • The setting is counterintuitive -- it's more fitting to have a narrow content area when the New User Tutorial is enabled so when the tray slides in from the right, it is not covering content.
  • The New User Tutorial is intrusive with a tray that flies in whenever a page is loaded.
  • The New User Tutorial is not a desirable feature at institutions where Canvas is well-understood and mature in its use.
  • Full Screen Width is desirable for media embeds, particularly the Kaltura v7 player that shows the transcript alongside the video, not below.
  • Full Screen Width is desirable for third-party integrations that use iframes to display content. The advantage of a wide content area is only possible by turning on an intrusive feature.

Proposed solution:

Allow the content widow to occupy the full screen width independent the New User Tutorial Feature Option.
