[Modules] Unlocking Modules for individual students

Hi all,

This idea has already been requested, but did not get enough votes. Manually Override Module Requirements for Students

Any chance this can go through the voting cycle again! Would be brilliant to have this idea incorporated within Canvas. In our k-12 institution we like to encourage independent learning, so we let students move through modules at their own pace. Different students have different capabilities and some may be quicker to complete module requirements, which is why we would like to open progressive modules for individual students whilst keeping the module locked for the remaining students. Whereas now, if were to open the modules those students who have not yet completed modules feel pressured and try to rush through the modules.

It is surprising that this idea / suggestion was put forward back in 2016 and still does not appear to be on the roadmap.  Is there any way to push this ahead.  This is a much needed feature.

Yes, since 2016 this issue remains unsolved. Accommodation isn't possible with the inability to unlock modules prematurely for individual students.

Students are:

*needing ADA accommodation for early release and are not having that need met.

* in the military with scheduling beyond their control.

*attending to medical issues (scheduled upcoming surgeries, for example)

and many other circumstances which necessitate allowing early entry while keeping a later date for other students to access a module.

Changes to assignment open/close dates are possible. Adding and changes to prerequisites are possible but NOT changes to "locked until (date)" for these no-longer-unique situations.

Please vote up!

Unfortunately, this topic was raised in 2014 and still is not open for voting.  This is really important for accessibility purposes.  Often students with special needs require their translator or assistant or DSPS specialist to access course materials early so the documents, etc., can be converted into the correct formats.  This is problematic when the module is closed until a specific date for all and there is no option for individual release.

Does anyone know if it is on the roadmap for future enhancements?

Have a wonderful day!

HI everyone, just wondering if anyone here could guide me. We have set up the 'lock until' function for all modules in one of our courses. However, one of the students has already complete this module (due to credit transfer) and would like to get started on the next one, however, I can't seem to be able to give access to the module to this student, unless I unlock the module, which means everyone else would have access to it.

Is there any way around that I don't know of?

I very much appreciate any assistance/guidance on this.

Cheers,

I support this idea! Many instructors including myself need to accommodate our students in various circumstances and this function would our lives a lot easier.

Problem statement:

As a teacher, I need to be able to remove the course sequence prerequisite for one or more students in my section, so that they may complete their assignments in any order. This functionality would provide a way to disengage prerequisites/sequence control for the user (typically for IEP) .

Proposed solution:

In our legacy LMS, we have the following functionality: - Provide an on/off toggle switch on the People page - Toggle switch should disengage any prerequisites for assignments or context modules within a course - Switch should be “on” as default

User role(s):

instructor,student

@KristinL I have no way to respond to your inquiry. But This is similar to Unlocking Modules for individual students and can be combined.

Hi @TracyHarelson -

Thank you for sharing your idea and your use case! I searched existing ideas, and I wonder if  [Modules] Unlocking Modules for individual students would meet your need. It feels similar, but I want to make sure that I completely understand your proposal. If yes, great! We can merge the threads together. If not, could you add a little bit of clarity so Community members and the Instructure Product Team can differentiate your request from the others? Thank you!

I look forward to hearing from you!

This idea was incorrectly labeled and has been moved into the Enable Differentiated Learning at Scale theme, which has been prioritized for further development.
