Verification that Gradebook comments are viewed by students

I would like to be able to see somehow when a gradebook comment I make is viewed by one of my students.  If I make corrections or comments on a submitted assignment I'm not always sure if they're even viewing them unless I get a comment back.  I would like to know that they're seeing it.  This helps cover me if they try to fight a grade or claim they don't understand why they got a particular grade.

As Christi mentioned, there a lot of complexities in knowing when someone views a comment, however we have a strong dependable trigger for knowing when users view feedback.  This feature should help?

Christi,

Is there any way to know if the students have it turned on that they get those comments sent to their email? If not, how about a notification for us that shows the comments were forwarded to their email? If the comments are being forwarded to their email they're likely viewing them. I just don't like the response that we're not going to look at this because we don't know if they read their email.  I would be happy with a notification that says the comments have been sent to them via email.  As Beth Young said it would help us to know who's getting the comments. If nobody's viewing the comments then I stop wasting my time making them. If I see they're all viewing them or getting them delivered to their email then I have something to fall back on when they come complaining about a grade they received.  216 people voted this up so there's clearly a desire to see this information.

I disagree with your comments mainly because right now I'm doing a lot of extra work to make comments on these assignments and I have no idea if they're being seen or not. If they're not being looked at I'll stop doing them. If I know they are being looked at or sent to their email then I keep doing them and have something to fall back on when they come complaining about a bad grade.

One way this might be accomplished would be if an instructor had a button that said "student(s) must view feedback" that pushed the feedback into the todo list for the student. Perhaps this could be a per student button or a button on the assignment (for when a batch of feedback has been whipped up) or even better, both.

In the old message system, the typed comments or recorded feedback on an assignment would show up in the list of messages both for me when I selected a student and for the student when he or she opened messages--it was wonderful to be able to see every bit of communication I had with a student during the term and not have to hunt for it. This also meant that I would automatically see if they had posted comments to me. I know this doesn't address crocodoc feedback, but it was a really nice feature that just disappeared.  I know that students can get feedback forwarded to their external e-mail if they set up notifications for that, but there was a really nice sense of conversation when all messages/feedback was organized in one spot in Canvas.

The Crocodoc timestamp which displays when a student reviews their assignment feedback is complete.

I think this is great news. Not exactly what I was hoping for but way better than what I had. If Crocodoc would only support more file types that would make this amazing. Great step in the right direction though.

I'm doing some idea clean up as we prepare for the next evolution of our process.  In reviewing this idea, I am tempted to mark it complete.   The feedback trigger is a dependable data point, much more so than a comment view.  I know it is not exactly what you were asking for, but I think we came up with a great compromise here.  What do yo think?

?This is fine. You can close this out. I'll just make sure I start using feedback on documents instead of just comments. Thanks.

Is there another idea out there about a timestamp for a student having read the comment or the comment being sent to their email via notifications?   I like the timestamp for croc doc and appreciate the implementation.   There are many  moving from a different LMS that did give a date and time for comments viewed on assignments and discussions.  It has been helpful for instructors and they have relied on that knowledge. I would hope that we could use this for Canvas as well.
