include Mobile App Page Views in Page Views on User Account Details Page

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

It would be nice if the Mobile App Page Views for a user were included in the user Page Views that are accessible on the User Account Details Page.

No matter how a user is moving around in the system (laptop, desktop, mobile device, mobile app) those actions should all be recorded/visible in one area and set of Page Views.

Hi, everyone,

For our community college, "participation" has to be more than a page visit; the "last date of attendance" is defined as the last day the student

  • was physically present
  • submitted an academic assignment
  • took an exam or quiz
  • participated in an interactive tutorial or computer assisted instruction
  • participated in an online discussion about academic matters
  • initiated contact with a faculty member to ask a question of an academically related matter pertinent to the course
But tracking page views, including on the Canvas mobile apps, CAN be helpful
(a) for determining whether the student has successfully entered the course when the term first begins and
(b) tracking the use of mobile apps by students.
As far as tracking is concerned, presumably the reports on page views would say where the information is coming from--mobile app or desktop/laptop, so faculty could see just which parts of the course are being accessed via mobile. That would be fascinating!

Hi, all,
This feature was deployed in the May 13 release, but we inadvertently left out the good news in Canvas Production Release Notes (2017-05-13)! Please accept our apologies. The information about this feature is now added to the release notes. Note that page views are not retroactive, so admins will only see mobile activity since May 13.
Thanks,
Erin

erinhallmark‌ could you please clarify?  The Release Notes state:

"At the account level, user page views include API calls from mobile activity. This change helps admins see user course participation in mobile devices."

From what has been stated in this discussion, the User Account Details page, which lists the page views at the bottom, now includes the mobile app data. Is this also true for the "Access Report" and "Analytics" pages for a student? And I am assuming that teachers and not just admins will be able to see this course participation, not just admins?

Thank you!

Hi Nancy,

You bring up an important question.  Unless I am mistaken, mobile API call data is now included at the account level but does not affect what teachers and students see at the course or individual level.

Hi, Nancy,

This particular change was written for the User Account Details page, which is only available at the account level. At the course level, no changes have been made.

Hope that helps!

Erin

Hi nlatimer! It looks like someone is thinking along the same lines as you: https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/9006-include-canvas-mobile-app-in-student-access-reports -- If you have a few minutes, it would be awesome if you could share some thoughts there too!
