I'm hoping someone can confirm if a change has occurred with the functionality of the Timer in New Quizzes compared to how it worked in Classic Quizzes.
In Classic, the "Until" date/time in a Classic Quiz was a hard deadline.
Example: A quiz has a 60 minute time limit and availability until 1pm. The student started the quiz at 12:55pm. The system automatically submits the quiz attempt when the availability ends at 1pm - ignoring the 55 minutes remaining in the student's attempt time.
In New Quizzes, my testing indicates that the "Until" date/time is not a hard deadline.
Example: A quiz has a 60 minute time limit and availability until 1pm. The student started the quiz at 12:55pm. They are able to work on the quiz for the full 60 minutes and submit at 1:55pm, 55 minutes after the end of the quiz availability.
Is my analysis correct? If so, is this the planned functionality of the New Quizzes tool or could it change back to the format from Classic Quizzes?
Thanks for confirming, Eman-Rashwan!
We recently switched from D2L Brigthspace, which has the same timer functionality as New Quizzes in Canvas. I personally prefer the Canvas Classic Quizzes functionality but either works.
Can someone confirm if this change in New Quizzes is something that will be "fixed" or if it's the new expected functionality?
You're right! The timer in my new quizzes augments the until date and time. We faced the same issues in Uni Adelaide with semester 1 exams. We currently discourage the use of new quizzes for timed exams until this issue is resolved.
