Canvas app submitting video instead of PDF

Jump to solution

I am teaching a course this summer and was playing around with the Canvas app for students. When I use the Canvas app as a student, I use the Scanner feature to upload as a submission. However, it appears that, on my end as a teacher, the scanner has changed the document into a video, for some reason.

I am using Canvas Free for Teachers. Any solutions would be grateful!

@zacdelane,

This has been registered as a ticket so hopefully, it will be fixed in a future release of the app. Thanks again for reporting this issue!

@zacdelane,

The latest version of the Canvas Student app doesn't show the Scan option when selecting Media Recording, so essentially it has been fixed for your use case. Best of luck!

@zacdelane,

Thanks for the message. I have never heard of the scanner converting the scanned JPEG into a video file? Not saying it's not happening here, though.

To double-check, are you using the built-in scanner feature for Canvas Student on iOS? This feature is available to students if an assignment includes a file upload.

If not, maybe you can share a quick video or screenshots of what you see on your end to help diagnose a little further. Thanks!

Here are some screenshots. I was submitting as myself (having the Teacher and Student role), so maybe that's why? I used the in app Doc Scanner as described in the article, and it showed up in SpeedGrader as this:

@zacdelane - I totally see this issue now. The screenshots were very helpful.

I was able to replicate this by:

  1. Submit Assignment
  2. Tap Media Recording
  3. Tap Scanner

I didn't get this issue with I did the following:

  1. Submit Assignment
  2. Tap File Upload
  3. Tap Scanner

My suggestion would be to disable Media Recording as a submission type for this assignment. This can be done inside the assignment settings on the web:

This is no doubt a bug, which you should report to your local tech support, but I suggest this quick fix to avoid this issue for your class.

Appreciate it. Unfortunately, I am using Canvas Free version, and they don't offer support for that anymore :(. But thanks for looking into it!
