Student quiz response includes an HTML link

I have a weird situation where a student response to a quiz question includes text that is linked to an external website. That indicates to me that the student either copied and pasted the text in and that process also copied the underlying link or that the student manually embedded the link after typing the text. The student claims that neither of those occurred.
So what am I missing here? It surely isn't possible that Canvas quiz text boxes automatically hyperlink a seemingly random set of words to an external page? Anyone else experienced anything like this?
