Unpublish assignments

I copied my course over from last semester. Fall semester is over so all the due dates etc and enrolled students are gone. I know I copied it correctly. 

BUT - about 30% of my assignments came over will not unpublish NO matter what I do. It tells me the grading period for that assignment has ended and functions are disabled. 

Ok - but why did 70 % of my assignments come over just fine? I have already reused some and made due dates etc.

I didnt realize it until a student asked today about the assignment - which I do at about week 5! They can see them!  When I click on the speed grader on that assignment that I dont want published, it is assigned to my current students - so it is not like it has submissions. There are no submissions - YET. 

Please tell me I can delete these or something? Why would only 30% come over like this?

The only solution I've found (and this issue frustrates me to no end) is to create a shell just for yourself (I call mine Setups with the quarter/term date and what class it is), import the items into that shell, unpublish EVERYTHING there, then import it unpublished and then you have control again. Something has gone wrong with the import function--I get dead links and permissions denied all the time, so you might re-check everything once you get it in unpublished, in Student View because it all works for me in regular view. 

Don't know if that will help but it's worth trying.

Did you "copy" or "import" the course content from the old course? I find "importing" works much better. When you import, you have an option of removing the assignment dates or "shifting" them forward. When you "shift" them forward, you'll enter the beginning dates of the old and new courses, and the dates will reset. (You'll still have to make adjustments.) Regardless of which option you choose, you must pick one of them to get rid of the old dates. Then make sure everything is unpublished in the new course. 

Again, "import" (not "copy") and remove or shift the dates forward.

Susan--not sure if you're responding to me or Maria, but I always use "import," not "copy," for sure. The problem is that our quarterly timelines change enough each quarter, I may not want that assignment at all, but won't know until we're into the quarter for a while. It's not just assignments, either. I'd love to be able to import anything--one page or a whole module--as unpublished. Sometimes I bring pages or assignments in mid-quarter, and if they're published, Canvas notifies the students, and then notifies them again when I un-publish them to edit or whatever. 

I have my work-around, but it would be a nice feature.

Hi Nicole,

Do you have new course shells for each quarter? I teach at a community college, so each semester, I begin with an empty course. Perhaps your set-up is different.

When you "import" into the new course, you can select which content to bring into your new course, and you can remove the dates. If the items are "published," when you import them, you should be able to go down the list and unpublish them.
