Building Level Principals

Jump to solution

Does anyone have any solutions, ideas, or recommendations for what to do with building principals in Canvas? I have several building principals who would like to view the teachers in their schools Canvas pages. However, with 100+ teachers in a building it is very tedious to add the principal to be an observer on each course. It also creates a very messy look for the principal's dashboard. Any help or insight is appreciated, thanks!

We put each school into its own sub-account and then just make the principal an admin of that sub-account. Then they can see all the courses for their school.

As the famous Meat Loaf, and the ever incredible Jim Steinman would say, "You took the words right out of my mouth,"  @MattHanes ‌!

We do the same thing -put each school into its own sub-account and then just make the principal an admin of that sub-account. Then they can see all the courses for their school.   We give guidance counselors the same rights to make announcements and masquerade  as students.

We also create sub-accounts for department curriculum associates in each school.

I'd like your support for a feature that would help to assign rights to principals, counselors and advisors to manage and view student data and courses without also giving them edit rights which is dangerous.  Please vote for this issue to help move this up on the development radar of Canvas.  I believe it helps all K-12 schools.  Thanks in advance.

Have you ever experienced any issue with a principal accidentally making changes to content?

Oh, definitely not. The principals that are savvy enough to try to do that will know not to. The rest of them probably don't remember how to login to Canvas. Usually it's our Academic Deans or Academic Coaches that monitor teacher content. They are typically more tech-savvy than the principals. We've had Canvas for 3 years and have never had a problem with that.
