Known issues indicate notable behaviors that has been escalated to the Canvas engineering team. Known issues are not a guarantee for an immediate resolution. This document is for informational purposes only and does not replace the Support process. If you are encountering the behavior outlined in this document, please ensure you have submitted a Support case (per your institution's escalation process) so Canvas Support can adequately gauge the overall customer impact and prioritize appropriately.

Parent Apps use the observer_alerts endpoint in the api to display recent upcoming items. This endpoint does not update when an item has been made unavailable via unpublishing, deleting, or course conclusion. This can be confusing to parents since they are presented with an "Unexpected error occurred" message with a retry button that will never help them.

Expected Behavior

This API endpoint should hide items that are not available to the user either by checking conditions on load OR the apps check the items for a valid response on load and hide what isn't available.

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Create a course with a Student and linked Observer

  2. Login to the Parent app as your observer.

  3. Set up alerts in the Parent app for 'Assignment missing'.

  4. Go back to course and create an Assignment, give it a due date within the next few minutes, publish the Assignment and then publish the course

  5. Notice that when the due date time passes on the Assignment, an Alert appears in the Parent App for the observer account.

  6. Un-publish the course and notice that the app retains the notifications that were sent out regarding the Assignment

  7. Delete the assignment and notice that the endpoint still has its details.
