Confusing error when adding existing users via non-confirmed emails

Description

 

When attempting to add an existing user to a course via an unconfirmed email address, the existing user doesn't appear for selection, and the user is told to create a new user. However, once they do, they get a confusing message leaving them confused as to what to do next.

Current message, after "creating a new user" for an unconfirmed email on an existing account: — The following users could not be created.... Matching user(s) already exist

Expected Behavior

 

  • Messaging to indicate why the user cannot be added by email, if their email address is unconfirmed.

    • Suggested wording: — This email has not been verified. Please add the user by either SIS ID or Login ID.

    • This will create a better user experience instead of the user thinking that they are just unable to add the user.

Workaround


No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce


Do the following in an account with at least one course and one user with an unconfirmed email communication channel:

1. In the course, go to the People page and click to add a new user ("+ People")
2. Enter the unconfirmed email address for the user and click Next
3. Note that the user is not found and you are asked to create a new user for that address. Select the row for that address, add a name, and click Next
4. See confusing note: "The following users could not be created.... Matching user(s) already exist"
