Linked course videos not playing in Safari; downloading linked file contains different video

Linked course videos not playing in Safari; downloading linked file contains different video

Canvas white logo

This case was resolved through an unrelated fix in the 2021-01-20 deploy.

Description

When a user links to a video that is in course files in the new RCE, that video doesn't play in Safari. If the user right-clicks the link and chooses to "download linked file", it does not play the original video when the HTML file is opened in Safari. This is a problem because users need to play videos in Safari and if the HTML file contains a different video, this could potentially be a security issue, since this is a link to a video resource that does not require authentication when viewed in the HTML file and doesn't belong to the school that hosts the videos in some cases or the creator of the video.

Expected Behavior

The original video should play when the link is clicked and opened in a new page and it should reference the same video when the link is downloaded.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisite: Have a video on your device. Create a course.

  • Open Safari on Mac
  • Add a video to your course files
  • Create a page and then add text to the page
  • In the edit view of the new RCE, highlight the text and then click the down arrow next to the media upload/record button
  • Click course media
  • Where it says, "media" click the drop-down and select all
  • Click course files
  • Click the video so that the text you highlighted is now a link
  • save the page
  • Click the link
  • Notice that it does not load
  • Right-click the link and select "download linked file"
  • Open the HTML file in Safari
  • Note that it is not the video you added to the course
