[OPEN] Multiple Dropdown questions with LaTeX can prevent old quizzes from migrating to New Quizzes

Canvas white logo

Description

If a Multiple Dropdown question has LaTeX with square brackets that create extra variables, and the extra variables have no possible answers, it prevents all questions in the quiz from migrating successfully from old quizzes to New Quizzes.

Expected Behavior

LaTeX in Multiple Dropdown questions should not prevent questions from migrating successfully from old quizzes to New Quizzes.

Workaround

  • Before migrating, add possible answers to the variables that are created by the equation (that shouldn't be there).
    or

  • Delete any offending equations or questions before migrating.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisite: A course with New Quizzes enabled

  1. Create an old quiz with a Multiple Dropdown question. With the equation editor, insert two '\nthroot' equations to the question.

  2. Confirm that two variables are created by the HTML in the equations.

  3. Do not add any possible answers, update the question, and save the quiz.

  4. From the Quizzes Index page, migrate the quiz to New Quizzes.

  5. Open the migrated quiz from the Assignments Index page and see that the Multiple Dropdown question did not migrate successfully.
