[OPEN] New Gradebook, Late Policies, and Multiple Quiz Attempts ding On-Time submissions

Canvas white logo

Description

Late Policies enabled with New Gradebook can cause unpleasant score calculations for On-Time attempts for Multiple Attempt quizzes in 2 out of 3 cases, when one or more of the attempts is Late.

  • If the Score to Keep is set to Average, and there is an attempt after the due date, we take the average of all the scores and then ding that average.
  • If the Score to Keep is set to Highest Attempt, and the Highest Attempt is not the attempt after the due date, the score is dinged.
  • If the Score to Keep is set to Latest Attempt, everything works properly.

Expected Behavior

To be determined by Product, however,

  • Average: It seems better to only subtract points from the late submission(s), and then average all the submissions.
  • Highest: It seems better to not penalize the On-Time submission if it is the highest.

Steps to Reproduce

Prerequisites: In a published course with student enrollments, have New Gradebook and a Late Policy enabled.

  1. Create a quiz that has a due date and allows for multiple attempts. Set the Score to Keep to Highest or Average.
  2. As a student, take the quiz before the due date.
  3. Wait for the Due Date to pass.
  4. Take the quiz again, and do slightly worse.
  5. Notice that your on-time submissions are penalized, in addition to your late submissions.
