[OPEN] RCE media uploads with older format and media_comment_maybe id are not playing

Issue Documented: 2025-05-20
Canvas

Engineers are currently investigating the issue.

Description

RCE media uploads still utilizing an older embed format where the media is added as a link with the instructure_file_link instructure_video_link class and the id set to media_comment_maybe do not play in the new media player and give Failed retrieving media sources. error.

Expected Behavior

The videos should be playing even if they don’t use the new format

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Disclaimer: This will illustrate the behavior but most of the embeds that exist in this format are from a few years ago before we changed the standard way we embed media.

  1. Upload a media file to the page

  2. Copy down the file id for the file (will be the number after media_attachments_iframe/ in the src for the video iframe in the HTML editor)

  3. Find the txt file attached to this Jira and copy the text out into another RCE html view or just lower on the same page.

  4. Replace the “your_course_id” with the Canvas id for the course and “your_file_id” with the file id copied above and save the page.

  5. Notice the old link with the media_comment_maybe id does not play and gives a Failed retrieving media sources. error.
