This behavior has been resolved and deployed to the production environment in versions 8.4 and 2.3.
When a media recording is embedded in a text entry submission through the iOS student app, the recording does not play and displays a black page with a crossed out play icon when viewing the submission the iOS student or teacher app.
Media recordings in text entry submissions made through the apps should be playable in the apps.
No workaround exists at this time.
Prerequisites: A course with Assignment Enhancements - Student enabled, a text-entry submission assignment, and a student and teacher enrolled.

As the student submit to the assignment with a media recording embedded in the text entry submission

As the student, navigate back to the submission and attempt to play the recording

Notice how the media player fails to load or play the video.

As the teacher access the submission through SpeedGrader and note that the media player again fails to play the video.
