Some non-alphanumeric characters don't displaying correctly in names with Split Student Names enabled

Some non-alphanumeric characters don't displaying correctly in names with Split Student Names enabled

Canvas white logo

This behavior is resolved in the 2022-01-19 deploy.

Description

  • When enabling the Split Student Names option in the Gradebook, student names with ' or ` are showing hex character codes instead of displaying the characters they signify.

  • This happens for both the first and last name columns.

  • Language specific characters (such as Chinese, Spanish, Swedish, Russian, etc) are not affected.

Expected Behavior

Display the characters properly.

Workaround

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

  1. Enable “Allow gradebook users to view and export student first and last names in separate columns” in your account settings

  2. Create a user with ' or ` in either their first or last name

  3. Enroll that user in a course

  4. Go to the course Gradebook > View > enable Split Student Names
