Users without permission to remove enrollments can do so by editing sections

This behavior is corrected in the 2021-08-04 deploy.

Known issues indicate notable behaviors that has been escalated to the Canvas engineering team. Known issues are not a guarantee for an immediate resolution. This document is for informational purposes only and does not replace the Support process. If you are encountering the behavior outlined in this document, please ensure you have submitted a Support case (per your institution's escalation process) so Canvas Support can adequately gauge the overall customer impact and prioritize appropriately.

Users without the permission to remove enrollees can still do so by attempting to move them to a new course section. This generates an error and drops the enrollee from the course.

Expected Behavior

Hide the option to edit the enrollee's sections or make the move successful.

No workaround exists at this time.

Steps to Reproduce

Have a course with at least 1 student and 1 teacher enrollment. For the teacher enrollment, make sure permissions are set so that they have the ability to manage sections, but they do not have permission to remove or add students. Have at least 2 sections, with the student only in 1 of them.

  1. As the teacher on the people page, click the vertical ellipsis next to a student and select "edit sections".

  2. Add the other section and remove the one they are in.

  3. Note that an error will appear at the top of the page, but after you refresh, the student is now no longer in the course.
