How do I create a benchmark assessment from an item bank as an admin?

As a Mastery Connect, district administrator or user with benchmark author or benchmark facilitator permission can create benchmark assessments and populate them with questions from available item banks.

Benchmark assessments can be delivered to trackers in your district.

Open Benchmark Assessments

In the Global Navigation menu click the Admin link [1]. Then, click the Assessments tab [2] and select the Benchmarks option [3]. To add a new benchmark assessment, click the Add Benchmark button [4].

Alternatively, if  you have been assigned the role of benchmark author or benchmark facilitator, in the Global Navigation menu click the Admin link [1]. Then, click the Benchmarks tab [2].

The Assessment Type drop-down displays the District Benchmark option by default [1].

To select a subject, core, and class for the assessment click the drop-down menus [2].

Click the Standard drop-down menu and select the Multi-Standard option [3].

To allow teachers to remove the benchmark from their trackers, click the Allow Teachers to Delete From Trackers checkbox [4].

Enter a name for the assessment in the Title field [5].

Optionally, enter a description of the assessment in the Description field [6].


  • Benchmark assessments must have multiple standards. If multiple standards are not selected, the benchmark is automatically converted to a formative assessment.
  • Only users with content approval permissions can edit or clone district-approved assessments.

To select an assessment source, click the Assessment Source drop-down menu [1]. Then, to select an available item bank from the Item Based list [2].

Note: The Item Based list only displays item banks that are available for use in your district.

To search for items by passage, standard, item type, or depth of knowledge (DOK), click the appropriate drop-down menus [1].  

You can also search for items by the following available features:

To select available features, click the appropriate checkboxes [2].

To search by item number, enter it in the text field [3].

To select items to add to the assessment, move them from the Item Results column to the Items in Assessment column by clicking the Add icon [1].

When the item has been successfully moved, the confirmation message displays [2].

Alternatively, you can add random items from the Item Results column by typing the number of items you want to add in the Add Random text box [3]. Then, to move the items to the Items in Assessment column, click the Add icon [4].

To randomize the order in which the items will appear in the assessment, click the Randomize button [5].

Enter Multi-Standard Mastery Scores

The total number of points possible for each standard displays in the Possible column [1].

Enter the number of points required for mastery of each standard in the M text boxes [2].

Enter the number of points required for near mastery of each standard in the NM boxes [3].

To view details about a standard, hover the cursor over the standard name link [4] to view the standard detail box [5].

To save your changes and create the assessment, click the Create Assessment button [1].

Note: To remove all selections on the page, click the Reset button [2].
