How do I create a formative assessment from an item bank as a teacher?

As a teacher, you can create formative assessments using questions from available item banks.

Assessments can align to single or multiple standards and can be kept private, shared with your school, or across your district.

Open Assessments  

In the Global Navigation menu, click the Assessments link [1]. Then, click the Add Assessment button [2].

Note: If you want to use specific standards from a tracker to create an assessment, you can create an assessment from a tracker.

To  select a subject, core, and class click the drop-down menus [1].

Click the Standard drop-down menu [2], and select the Single or Multi-Standard option.

Enter a name for the assessment in the Title field [3].

Optionally, enter a description of the assessment in the Description field [4].

To select a privacy option, click the Privacy menu [1]. Then,  select one of the following privacy options:

  • Share With The Community [2]: You and anyone in the Mastery Connect Community can add the assessment to trackers. Only you can edit the assessment.
  • Private to Me [3]: The assessment is only visible to you. Only you can add it to trackers or edit it.
  • Private to My School [4]: You and others in your school can add the assessment to trackers. Only you can edit the assessment.
  • Private to My District [5]: You and others in your district can add the assessment to trackers. Only you can edit the assessment.

Note: If you select the Share With The Community option, the source assessment materials can not be copyrighted. To confirm this, click the Assessment is Not Copyrighted checkbox [6].

To select an assessment source, click the Assessment Source drop-down menu [1].

In the Item Based list, select the name of an item bank [2].

Note:  The Item Based list will display only item banks that are available for use in your district.

In Item Filters, use the drop-down menus to search for items by passage, standard, item type, or depth of knowledge [1].  

To filter items by available features, click the checkboxes [2].

To search for a question by item number, enter the number in the Search By Item Number text field [3].

To select items to add to the assessment, move them from the Item Results column to the Items in Assessment column by clicking the Add icon [1].

When the item has been successfully moved, the confirmation message displays [2].

Alternatively, you can add random questions from the Item Results column by typing the number of questions you want to add in the Add Random text box [3]. Then, to move the items to the Items in Assessment column, click the Add icon [4].

To randomize the order in which the items appear in the assessment, click the Randomize icon [5].

Note: If you plan to print the assessment, select only items that display the Printer icon [6]. Items that do not display the Printer icon contain Technology Enhanced Items (TEIs) and can not be printed.

In a single-standard assessment the total number of points possible on the assessment displays in the Scoring column [1].  

Enter the number of points required for mastery in the Mastery box [2], and the number of points required for near mastery in the Near Mastery box [3].

For multi-standard assessments, the total number of points possible for each standard displays in the scoring column.

Enter the number of points required for mastery of each standard in the M box [2].

Enter the number of points required for near mastery of each standard in the NM box [3].

To view details about a standard, hover the cursor over the standard name [4] to view the standard detail box [5].

To save your changes and create the assessment, click the Create Assessment button [1].

Note: To remove all selections on the page, click the Reset button [2].
