When answering fill-in-the-blank questions in New Quizzes, sometimes answers are deleted or truncated AFTER the quiz is submitted, causing those answers to be marked wrong, even if they were entered correctly. I notice this behavior when the answers are numbers, especially when the numbers are entered using a keyboard's number pad. The behavior seems to be related to the speed at which the answers are entered; the faster the answers are keyed in, the more likely the glitch is to occur.
Canvas was notified of this behavior Summer 2024 and has acknowledged that there is a problem. However, they have stated that they will not fix it. Canvas made a post in "known issues," along with a statement that the problem will not be addressed. Here is a link to that post: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Known-Issues/Quickly-answering-fill-in-the-blank-questions-cause-...
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? I observed it again just today (May 12, 2025). I am using New Quizzes for multiple-attempt home assignments, but because of the glitch, not for proctored exams. For proctored exams, I am sticking with Classic Quizzes. I considered not using New Quizzes at all, but there are some really cool features that I want to make available on at least some low stakes quizzes. I am hoping that if enough of us share concerns, Canvas might fix it.
Canvas advised this bug was recently fixed. We reported this last month after noticing that when the answers were downloaded via API where different to what was showing in SpeedGrader. It looked like special characters were causing the issues. @kowens
