Is there a plan to allow a Quizzes.Next assessment to be the initial assessment for Mastery Paths?

Jump to solution

Unless I am missing something, I am not seeing the ability to set up a #quizzes.next quiz as the initial assessment in a Mastery Path.  It can be added as conditional content, but does not appear to currently be possible as the initial assessment that decides which path a student follows.  If this is possible, please share if you know how.  If it is not possible, will the ability be available in the future?

Hi ryan.corris@lakotaonline.com‌,

At this time there is no set plan one way or the other. Knowing this would be valuable to you helps give this functionality more weight when it comes up in future prioritization exercises.

Thanks for your reply kdougherty@instructure.com‌!  Yes, it would definitely be beneficial.  Currently a graded quiz, a graded discussion, or a graded assignment can be used as the initial assessment for #mastery paths‌.  Once the initial assessment is graded, conditional content is released for the path each student is to follow.  Quizzes is a great way to give students instant feedback and automatically have the conditional content released for their path.  If Quizzes.Next is not associated with Mastery Paths, and when the current quizzes go away, there won't be a way to automatically release the conditional content since teachers will be required to grade the assignment or graded discussion for students to receive a score.  Does this make sense?

Hi, we would like this as well - having Mastery Paths available in Quizzes.next in the initial phase.

This would be very desirable and a natural feature to add to the next generation of Quizzes, since it is already implemented in the old Quizzes and it would encourage more instructors to use the Mastery Paths feature to customize the student learning experience.

If Mastery Paths goes away with Quizzes.next we will no longer be able to use Canvas LMS for our self-paced math classes. This is a necessary feature for our courses.

Please, consider this as a priority!

This is a cause for concern--potential deal breaker--if Mastery Paths and Quizzes.Next do not have a map to work together. Isn't the future plan to replace Quizzes with Quizzes.Next.

This is already causing issues for us. Our administration wants to use Quizzes.Next, but it:

  • does not work well from the Commons
  • is limited when used with Blueprints
  • cannot be included with Mastery Paths.
  • other issues with course management too long to describe in this context

If these are not high priorities, it seems that the entire LMS will see a net loss of functionality as Quizzes.Next takes root.

If Quizzes.next is to replace the Quiz tool then you would expect it to have, at a minimum, the functionality of that tool. The expectation from many, including myself, was that Quizzes.next would actually offer much more.

I am somewhat perplexed that this feature appears not to be a consideration given that it's counterpart has a key role to play with Mastery (learning/assessment) Paths. Whilst we do not use this currently, it would seem that if you are to keep Mastery Paths working to its initial aims then you don't remove key elements of it?

It's also a bit of a blow as I had hoped to present the use of Quizzes.next. Learning Outcomes  and Learning Mastery Paths at our T&L Conference in April :O(

Did someone from the product team not sit down and write out a list of all the existing features offered by the Quiz tool and then made decisions on when these features would be added to Quizzes.next. Surely there is an overall plan for when these features are added and not that ...at this time there is no set plan one way or the other .

On what basis is a feature from the old quiz tool considered for Quizzes.next? It would be nice to know what the roadmap is for Quizzes.next particularly in regard to these and other elements missing.

Quizzes.next is an LTI add in. More schools/colleges/unis are looking to other LTIs to enhance Canvas. Perhaps this is an area that requires more product development - ronmarx@mac.com

Any updates by chance on this?

I concur with others that Mastery Paths is a pretty important component of our vision for using Canvas over time.

Agree with this! We are going to be rolling out more support for Mastery Paths and Quizzes.Next this August.
