Allow students to improve answers in a quiz

Jump to solution

I set my students a quiz but after assessing it and making comments on their incorrect answers I wanted them to correct these answers using the guidance I had given. But when they started their second attempt, their correct answers were wiped as well as the incorrect ones, so they had to do the whole quiz again in order to improve their scores. How could I have enabled them just to refine their incorrect answers while retaining the correct ones?

Hello Philip,

When you allow additional attempts on a quiz, those attempts will always begin with answers unselected/left blank, just as it was when they started the first attempt.  Each attempt is designed to be independent from previous attempts.  This allows for things like random question selection, where a student gets different questions with each attempt.

If your school is using the new Quizzes.Next quiz tool in Canvas (see https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-15057-4152780597 ) will soon be the option to re-open the attempt for students to finish or change their submission.  It's described in the upcoming release notes for the Feb. 16 update at https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-16291-canvas-release-notes-2019-02-16#jive_content_id_Quizz....

However, that's a new feature and I'm not quite sure how it handles things like feedback.  Also, many schools do not have the Quizzes.Next tool turned on.

Hello,  @philip_irwin  and  Welcome to the Canvas Community! Mike has accurately described how quizzes work in Canvas; students receive a new quiz for each subsequent attempt. You might be interested in supporting https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/4709-carry-forward-correct-answers-on-quiz-multiple-attempts which is akin to the scenario you've described.

Done, thank you. This development would really help my students as we have a culture of revisiting and improving. Starting over each time is daunting for them.

Thanks for pointing out the idea under consideration, stefaniesanders!

I created a solution in form of a Chrome extension that does exactly that.
Canvas Quiz Loader - Chrome Web Store
