@wanatch , an assignment's weight is determined by its points, and in an unweighted gradebook an assignment worth 100 points will contribute more to the course grade than one worth 50 points. Using weighted assignment groups allows the Gradebook to calculate students' grades automatically, keeping in mind that the assignments within each assignment group will contribute to that group's grade proportionately based on the points set on each assignment.
