Canvas App Video Feedback Long Upload with New iPhone

Hello Everyone--

I've been using the Canvas app on my iPhone 8 to upload video feedback for years. My videos are typically about 5 minutes long and upload quickly (I have very good internet).

I recently upgraded to a new iPhone and the videos are not uploading. Five, ten minutes go by, but nothing. I've tried downgrading the quality (720p) and I've tried switching the camera settings to "most compatible", but they are still not uploading.

I know the videos can upload because when I do very short testing videos of 5 secs long, they upload without a problem. 

Any suggestions on other settings I might try? Anyone else have this problem?

Hi Nils -

It sounds like you're well-acquainted with the Canvas Teacher app, so I wonder what switched with the new phone. I assume it's up-to-date and you have the most recent version of Canvas Teacher installed.

How many MB are your files?

Yes, everything is up-to-date with both the phone and the Canvas app.

Do you know if there's a way to check how many MB the files are? Since I'm recording the video in the Canvas app, I don't see how I can view that information.

The new iPhones are default HEIC files, so this is why I thought resetting the iPhone's camera settings to "most compatible" would do the trick. Perhaps, if I have some time, I'll try to upload again today to see if I'm still having the same problem.

Any luck with this? Another suggestion would be to record the phones with your camera app and then upload them into Canvas instead of using the in-app recorder. Thanks.

Hi Ryan--

No luck. I just noticed that the new iPhone SE has the following video formats: HEVC and H.264. I'm guessing this isn't compatible with Canvas. Any info on this would be appreciated.

As an English teacher with over 100 students, upload time has to be in the neighborhood of 30 seconds. Otherwise, it's not an efficient use of my time. I've experimented with converting/moving files and it always ends up taking longer to convert and upload than the actual 5-6 minute videos themselves. Unfortunately, that doesn't work for me.

But any info on whether the video format is the problem would be greatly appreciated. Then I could look out in Canvas for when those file formats are supported.

Thanks for the additional information. I'll have to do more research as these kinds of issues are tricky because there are three elements 1) The phone 2) The internet 3) The app itself.
