Canvas Discussion Grading Feature

I received this email from one of my faculty:

Hi Eric,

The Graded box is disabled when I limit the “Post to” to one section. The “Post to” default is “All sections” which will allow me to select the Graded box. What do I do?

Any assistance would be most appreciated.

Eric, I hadn't noticed this until you asked the question.  I hope we can get an answer soon.

Howdy Eric Whitmer,

I'm guessing your instructor wants to have a graded discussion just for one section of students, yes? From https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/9305-discussions-for-sections it indicates that "Section assignment of graded discussions is handled through differentiating the assignment."

I see where the confusion can happen, but it's easy to fix.

To make the graded discussion just for a section:

1. Ignore the Post To entry field
2. Check Graded under Options (the Post To field disappears)
3. Select the section under the Assign To entry field

Ignore Post to field. It is only for non-graded discussions.
