Over the weekend the Canvas email system appears to have gone through some changes. Since this change, it is not possible to, at a glance, distinguish between read and unread emails. The only way we can see to distinguish them is to go to the drop-down to show only unread emails only. We have elementary/middle school students whose only way to interact with their teacher is through email in this program. These changes are going to confuse them because they won't see that blue dot or bolding or anything that tells them which email is unread. Canvas can't expect the logic that the unread email is on top to work for an elementary student, especially since my teachers are ALSO confused. Please add back in a feature that distinguishes between read and unread emails.
We're sorry you're experiencing this behavior, and our engineering teams are just wrapping up that fix. We hope to have that resolved tomorrow.
The fix has been deployed to our production environment, so you should no longer have trouble distinguishing between read and unread messages.
Let us know if you have any additional questions!
Can we also fix it so that the star on starred emails is always visible like it used to be? Now I can see it on about half the starred emails, but not the other half of them.
Our team is working on fixing a behavior where the star is hidden if the text in a conversation is longer than a couple of sentences. I'm not sure if that's the same behavior you're seeing, and if it's not, please let our Canvas support team know so that they can replicate and provide feedback to our engineering teams. In the meantime, I hope this upcoming fix will correct what you've reported! Pending approval by our QA team we'll incorporate the fix into our upcoming release on December 9.
