Changing order of grading in Speed Grader

Jump to solution

The Speed Grader "next" and "previous" arrows are always following either alphabetical order or the group name order.  But this is often not the order I want to grade in.

Some orders I would want to grade in:

  • order of submission (first turned in is first graded)
  • random (to avoid systematic biases due to grading order—caused by fatigue or growing irritation)
  • worst course grade to best course grade—to find the most common errors to put into my grading rubric quickly.  Also to reduce the effect of grading fatigue (good papers are easier to grade).
  • best grade on assignment to worst grade on assignment—useful for doing a pass over the graded assignments to check for consistency of scoring.
  • next ungraded. (Speed Grader currently steps through even the ones that have already been graded)

Is there any way to change the meaning of the previous and next arrows?

For some of the orders I want, there is a rather awkward work-around.  I can keep the gradebook open, and I can go to the next student on the list by

  • switching tabs
  • left clicking on the  assignment for the next student to grade
  • left-clicking on the tiny box that appears
  • right-clicking on Speed Grader
  • left-clicking on open in new tab
  • changing tabs

That's six clicks per transition, and it doesn't count the additional clicks needed to remove the extra tabs that get opened.  Furthermore, the gradebook doesn't update, so I have to find the next student to grade each time, without information about which ones I've done.

Hi gasstationwithoutpumps‌.  There are a few options for changing the order of grading in Speedgrader.  If you open Speedgrader and click on the gear icon in the upper left-hand side of the screen there are options to sort students by student name, the date the assignment was submitted, or submission status (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13084-415255026?sr=search&searchId=6fd95c8f-0de3-4578-93ac-...) .  You can also hide student names and grade by question (my instance shows this is in beta).  This may fit some of the need you describe above.

There is an idea currently open to randomized submissions that you might be interested in voting for, https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/10701-randomize-submissions-in-speedgrader?sr=search&searchId=....  I didn't see anything already related to order by grade.  You might consider creating an idea for something like this.  This document describes this process How do I create a new feature idea?

Best wishes!

Hi gasstationwithoutpumps...

I'm not sure if any of these settings would fit for your needs, but at the top left corner of the SpeedGrader, you'll see five icons.  The right-most icon is the "Settings" icon which looks like a gear/cog wheel.  When you click on that, a small "SpeedGrader Options" window opens.  There are three options that you can choose from in the provided drop-down list along with an option for hiding the student names.  Further information can be found in this Guide: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13084-415255026  I hope this helps, Kevin.

That provides one of the sort orders I wanted (date of submission, assuming that really means date and time).  None of the others though.

gasstationwithoutpumps I thought I would let you know that I just checked a quiz from a previous class and when arranged by date, the hour and minute of the submission are provided.  Speedgrader appears to at least organize these by day and hour of submission.  I would guess that minutes are included in this determination as well.

gasstationwithoutpumps,

Were you able to find an answer to your question? I am going to go ahead and mark this question as answered because there hasn't been any more activity in a while so I assume that you have the information that you need. If you still have a question about this or if you have information that you would like to share with the community, by all means, please do come back and leave a comment.  Also, if this question has been answered by one of the previous replies, please feel free to mark that answer as correct.

SpeedGrader (a very bad misnomer, as it is far slower than the same grading on paper) supports only one of the grading orders I'm interested in.  So the question was answered, but only to the limited extent that the software supports.
