De-selected quizzes are importing anyway

Jump to solution

I'm working with an instructor who is attempting to copy most of his course content into another course, but wants to leave out certain exams. However, when he imports the course and de-selects those exams during the "select content" stage, the exams show up anyway.

The tl;dr - Has anyone experienced this, and know whether it's a bug or expected behavior? Is there a quick fix?

The exact steps:

  • Export course from Course A
  • Go to Course B and Import Course Content > Content Type = Canvas Course Export Package > Select Specific Content > Import
  • During the "select content" part of the process, he selects every category, but goes into Quizzes and de-select the 6 exams he wants to leave out
  • The exams import anyway

I thought maybe the exams were still appearing because they're also listed in the Assignments category. So I tried it again, de-selecting the exams from both Quizzes and Assignments. They still imported.

Now, I should point out that he creates all of his quiz questions in question banks first, then builds the quizzes/exams to pull from the question banks. Could the existence of the question banks be forcing the import?

Tagging Canvas Admins‌ (but didn't want to limit the question to that space)

I tried de-selecting the corresponding Assignments also, and they STILL showed up.

That is weird! Worth a support case.

Hi tdelillo@alamo.edu

That could be why, but I am not sure. Why are you creating an export file first the importing it, rather than simply performing a course copy? I have found that the choice "Copy another Canvas course" seems to work best, and provides the granularity of copy choices you need.

Try that route, and see if it performs better. Let me know!

tdelillo@alamo.edu, since Quizzes also have corresponding Assignments, depending on the order of clicks it's possible for the Assignment to be checked at import time, bringing with it the Quiz it "contains"-- despite the Quizzes category having been de-selected as a whole.

Yes, that's what I thought also. But I tried de-selecting the corresponding Assignments also, and they STILL showed up. It's possible that the trick is in the "order of clicks" though.

I just tried it again. I used course copy instead of export/import (per Kelley's suggestion), and was careful about click order - deselecting the exam "assignments" first, which automatically deselected the exam "quizzes" (which seemed promising) - and they STILL showed up. :smileycry:

I marked dittor@wharton.upenn.edu‌'s answer correct, because I did end up putting in a support ticket, and the response was:

"I was able to test this in my own sandbox with a quiz and was able to replicate the same error. I will get this forward to our higher support team to have a further look into this issue".

So I'm taking that to mean it is NOT expected behavior.
