Deleting Quiz Questions without Affecting Students

Jump to solution

We have a bit of an interesting situation with our Canvas courses. We are any agency that is comprised of 34 colleges. Our agency creates and maintains the Canvas courses for which the end users at each of the colleges are enrolled. We have several hundred "students" currently enrolled in a required course with several hundred more students enrolling on an open enrollment basis.

The required Canvas course is undergoing a face lift. Several of the quizzes need to be edited by not only deleting certain questions but also by adding new questions to the original quiz. What is the best way to go about this editing? I'm concerned that if quiz questions are deleted and then re-scored, the students who already completed the quiz will be affected.

gfulmer@sbctc.edu,

Unfortunately, the answer to this is no.  If you change a quiz that has already been taken, you will have to go back and re-grade the students that took the original quiz.  It may be best to create new quizzes and change the release criteria of the old quizzes to only be available to the past students (if you are using sections, this is fairly easy to do).

Thanks for the information Robbie. Unfortunately we are not using sections but may move in that direction since updates to the course quizzes will probably be necessary again in the future. The other issue we have going is that the course is open enrollment so I'm not completely sure that sections would work.

At this point we have decided to download the grade book, regrade and then if there are issues with a particular student, we can go back in and update. Most likely the current students will not be interested in their quiz information and have moved on after completing the course. We are just making sure to cover our bases.
