Duplicating items (a module, for example)

Jump to solution

Is there a way — or has anyone developed a workaround — to duplicate major canvas elements like modules or assignments? I'm thinking of the type of option available in Google Docs where one right-clicks on a document and is given the possibility to create a duplicate. Thanks a lot for reading.

Hi bradhorn‌,

You can copy elements from one course to another (or even the same course) by using the course copy import tool and using the 'Select specific content' option.

The course copy tool is explained in this guide: How do I copy content from another Canvas course?

The 'Select specific content' option is explained in this guide: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-9878-4152497985

Alexander &  @klundstrum , question for you two: So if I wanted to use this method to duplicate content within a single course (duplicate a quiz ten times then just change the questions & answers), sounds like I would need more than one class at my disposal to do-so? In other words, the path would need to be Course 1 > Course 2 > Course 1 (again). What if I only have one Canvas course? To use this method my administrator would need to create another course for me first?

Thanks a lot.

Hi Brad,

You can do this with a single course.

When you select the course, you can just choose the current course. You can only duplicate the same item once, but if you keep selecting the new copy, you should be able to do it indefinitely.

Thanks,

Alex

bradhorn- Are you looking for this type of functionality?  https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/1140

If so, it was something that was discussed and given priority at the recent Project Khaki event... so it's probably (hopefully) coming soon!

Thanks, Tracey. Yes, that is what I'm hoping to do—duplicate elements within the same course (rather than duplicating an element from one course and moving it to another like Alexander is describing). Anything I can do to encourage the development of this functionality? Can't think of a missing feature that would be more helpful.

Well, you can continue to comment on the Idea I linked to. It was created a while ago, but the comments are ongoing. The page that outlines the Khaki priorities (https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10748-khaki-2017-priorities ) is unfortunately closed for comments, but it may be worth bookmarking or following, in case  @Renee_Carney ‌ or  @scottdennis ‌ add any updates.

Hi Tracey and Brad,

Tracey, thank you for helping Brad navigate around the feature idea forums.  One aspect of these forums that is very useful for our product folks is when people contribute use cases and aspects of how they would need a given feature or aspect of Canvas to function.  It is particularly helpful when this information is added to specific ideas so that when, for example we might be building the option to make a copy of a module and all its contents, vs adding a way for people to make multiple copies of a given quiz, all the feedback around what would have to be separate development projects are already neatly gathered in separate threads.  In the example of https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/1140 the peerless  @jthoms  created the original idea and then later came back and created separate ideas for specific projects (They are all linked in the comments on the original thread).

Similarly we closed comments on the published list of Project Khaki projects and priorities and are instead encouraging people to tag ideas that relate to the individual Khaki items so that as the product managers and engineers work on the individual projects they will have clear direction from the community at large.

I hope this makes sense.  If you have questions about any of it, please let us know.

Regards,

SD

Hi bradhorn~ Right now, the information that akkaufmann shared is correct. While it's not the most straight-forward, it does allow instructors and designers to complete the task. I love that  @tdelillo  shared the Feature Idea and Khaki documents with you as well. I hope that you join the discussions!
