Entering equations for fill in the blank questions in quizzes

Is there a way to enter equations as answers for fill in the blank questions?  I am creating quizzes for my math students and I have made several multiple choice items, but I also want to include questions where the students type in their responses rather than selecting multiple choice options.

You may enter basic expressions into a fill in the blank question, but you are limited to text-only responses. The Rich Content Editor, which houses the equation editor, is not available. For anything but the most simple expressions, be prepared to go through and regrade manually since students will probably enter the content in a way that is correct but that you didn't think of.

In order to enter mathematical content with the equation editor, you need to need to use essay questions. These are not automatically graded.

James, I disagree as it is the opposite.  I cannot, for example, use [%>%]  and have Canvas leave this as a fill in the blank.  Instead it will display [%>%].  However, in the response field I can type in %>%. Regardless, however, the fact that the Canvas system does not allow the use of basic operators in the question stem and responses is ridiculous and a example of a poorly written program.  For the life of me, I cannot grasp why I cannot ask FIB question where a the answer involves expressions that are on every keyboard.
