Help! Assigning work from Google Drive without it changing my copy!

My district is moving to Canvas this school year. I have been creating my courses and adding assignments from my google drive. There's a problem, however. When I click on an assignment link in Canvas and type in anything, it also changes my master assignment copy in google drive as well. How can I prevent this from happening? I know in Google Classroom I could select the option to assign each student a copy which allowed them to edit assignments without changing mine.
