How do I add a question from an existing quiz to a question bank?

I encountered this question from a faculty member today. AND I have an answer: Export the quiz as a QTI zip file. Import the quiz into the class again.

Situation

I have a CLASSIC quiz with questions that do not exist within a question bank.

Solution

Phase 1 - Export the quiz

This saves a copy of a quiz to your computer as a QTI zip file.

  1. Identify the quiz containing questions NOT in a question bank.
  2. Click the Settings link from within the section with this quiz.
  3. Click the Export Course Content button.
  4. Mark to export a quiz.
  5. Select the quiz you want to export.
  6. Click the Create Export button.
    • Wait for the export to complete.
    • Refresh the screen.
  7. Click the link that appears with your new export.
  8. Save the file in a good location with a good name.

Phase 2 - Import the QTI file

This creates two things: 1) A quiz with the same name as the one you exported, and 2) A quiz bank with the same name

  1. Click the Settings link from within the section with this quiz.
  2. Click the Import Course Content button.
  3. Choose QTI .zip file from the content type dropdown.
  4. Click the Browse button.
    • Select the file you exported.
  5. Click the Import button.

Sidebar Notes

  • You may want to use the "Copy to" feature to make a copy of this quiz in another course (a sandbox course, if you have one). This allows you the ability to rename the quiz so there is no confusion later from the import.
  • You may want to delete questions from the copy of the quiz IF there are questions that DO appear in a question bank (so you don't end up with duplicate questions in multiple quiz banks).
  • Be sure to import the quiz into the course where you need the quiz bank. This is likely NOT the sandbox course mentioned above.
