How do I back up an exported course?

Hi everyone,

NEW ADMIN HERE!

I understand courses can be exported into .imscc files. Can these files be loaded on to a terabyte hard drive? what are our options for storing exported courses?

Also, my computer had a hard time reading the file. Is there any specific application I need, or is it only going to readable in canvas?

Finally, would I just import these files back in to get the course uploaded?

Hey Alex,

Welcome to being a Canvas admin and, belatedly, welcome to the Canvas Community!

An imscc file is a special kind of zip file that uses a Common Cartridge specification to allow the same course data to be imported into different Learning Management Systems (LMS).  The format was created by the IMS Global Learning Consortium.  Lots of programs can import an .imscc file but if you simply want to see what is inside one, rename it with a .zip extension and then open it with your Finder or navigation tool of your choice.

Yes you can back .imscc files up, just like any other electronic file for later re-upload into Canvas or any other IMS standard compliant system.
