How to load assignment automatically in a new window?

I have created an assignment that uses an external tool. When clicking on the assignment, the result is a page that says "This tool needs to be loaded in a new browser window" and a button that says "Load [assignment] in a new window". The student then needs to click the button to get to the assignment.

Is there a way to instruct Canvas to load the assignment automatically in a new window without this extra step of the student having to click that button?

Hi lriddle@agnesscott.edu‌, can you please share the name of the external tool?  There are many external tools which can actually be integrated within Canvas courses.  (Some of them might require a paid/premium subscription to the tool.). Perhaps this is one that you can integrate within your Canvas course?

The external tool was using LTI to connect to our WeBWorK server for online

homework. The additional space available for the problems being solved is

useful when opened in a new window rather than integrated within the Canvas

environment.

Thanks for sharing that info as it's very helpful. Can you please go to your Course Navigation menu and see if there's a link to this LTI?  If there is, see if you can remove that link from your course, try connecting again, and then see what happens.  If it's not integrated within Canvas as an LTI you can either open a new window, type the name in the address bar, connect etc.  Or, you could have the link posted somewhere in your course, click on the link, and see if it connects the way that you want it to.  Hope this helps.

How do I manage Course Navigation links?
