How to prevent late quiz takers from seeing correct answers?

A professor has a question and I'm not sure how to answer! She has created a quiz with a Due date of Oct 27 11:59pm and Show Correct Answers at is set to Oct 28 at 12 am. But she doesn't want to let students who are late in taking the quiz see the correct answers.

There's no way to accomplish this with one quiz, is there? I'm thinking maybe she has to duplicate the quiz, remove the Show Correct Answers date, and then assign the quiz to any students who have not taken the quiz as of 11:59 pm on Oct 27.

Any thoughts you have to share are greatly appreciated. Happy Friday!

Hello  @hmacdermott ‌, did students actually see the answers if they did not take the quiz or is she assuming that is what is going to happen? 

That is not how it works (or at least not how it should work), only students who have submitted a quiz get to see the correct answers.  Students who have yet to take the quiz will still be given the same quiz (without answers showing).  The only difference is if they are past the show date, they will get immediate feedback with the correct answers after completing the quiz/test.

Thanks for taking the time to reply. Yes, she is concerned that students can see the correct answers,on beginning on Oct 28 at 12 am even if they didn't take the quiz.

Only students who have taken it will see the answers, does she not want the students that take it later to get immediate feedback after submitting?

If I understand how the options work for showing & hiding the correct answers, your instructor would want to set the correct answers date for "Hide Correct Answers at" 11:59pm Oct 27 or 12am Oct 28.

This would allow anyone who takes the quiz before 11:59pm Oct 27 to see their correct answers & anyone who takes the quiz after 11:59pm Oct 27 would not see the correct answers.

She wants students who have taken the quiz BEFORE the due date (11:59 pm on Oct 27) to see the answers AFTER the due date, so that’s why Show Correct Answers is set to Oct 28 at 12 am. But I don’t think it’s possible to then prevent a subset of students (those who didn’t take the quiz before the due date) from seeing the correct answers.

You are correct.

In order to accomplish this it would be a lot of manual last minute work on the instructor, which would not be ideal for anyone.

If the students only have one attempt on the quiz, then there would be no impact on their grades by allowing them to see the correct answers upon completing the quiz & by closing the access at midnight on the due date. Though, another option might be to only allow access to seeing the correct answers for completed quizzes on the actual due date. Not before or after, just on October 27th. This would give students the one day access to viewing the correct answers if they completed the quiz & would not allow anyone taking the quiz late to view correct answers at all. Which would essentially give the instructor the results she is trying for.
