Is it possible to give students two ways to demonstrate mastery of material?

Hello Canvas Community,
I am trying to provide students with two ways fo demonstrating mastery of course content, either by taking an exam or by taking the exam and completing 3 assignments. The students can decide which path they prefer.
Way #1: Exam = 40% of their grade
Way #2: Exam = 5% of their grade, Assignment 1 = 20% of grade, Assignment 2 = 10% of grade, Assignment 3 = 5% of grade
The exam is the same in Way #1 and Way #2.
Is this possible? I tried to implement this with the mastery path feature in Canvas. However, it seems assignments in mastery paths are driven by a score in a graded assignment, not by a choice made by a student.
