Mobile device use statistics

Jump to solution

I was looking for reporting on mobile device use in Canvas. However, there doesn't seem to be any reporting on this.

I found an older post that mentions that Canvas might be working on getting this kind of data to us.

Canvas Analytics | Canvas LMS Community

The data that we tried to run indicated that 3.42% if requests came from Mobile devices on data ran last week. It was difficult to tell if a browser or the mobile app was used too.

Anyone else interested in seeing mobile usage data or know how to get it?

Thanks so much.

Leona 🙂

lbarratt1@unl.edu‌,

Great question. There is no quick and easy way to get this data right now. At UCF we are able to get this data through Canvas Data, but not every school has the resources to support Canvas Data. Also, traditionally the Canvas Data has been very noisy when it comes to the native mobile apps, so you have to spend a lot of time to clean it up. This is getting better when recent updates to clean up Page views that was introduced with Canvas Student 6.3 - https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-15151-canvas-student-release-notes-ios-63#jive_content_id_M...

If you look through the Canvas Data, or the CSV download from the User Details page, the native apps are identified by the following user agents:

Canvas Student - iOS
  • Canvas
    • ex: Canvas/3.14.0 (iPhone; iOS 9.3.2; Scale/2.00))
RARELY USED or DEPRECATED
  • iCanvas
    • ex: iCanvas/3.13.2 (iPhone; iOS 9.3.2; Scale/2.00))
  • Canvas/com.instructure.icanvas
    • ex: Canvas/com.instructure.icanvas (1035; OS Version 9.3.2 (Build 13F69))
  • CanvasKit
    • ex: CanvasKit/1.0
Canvas Student - Android
  • candroid
    • ex: candroid/4.5.0 (122)
Canvas Teacher - iOS
  • Teacher
    • Ex: Teacher/0.3 (iPhone; iOS 11.0; Scale/3.00)
Canvas Teacher - Android
  • androidTeacher
    • Ex: androidTeacher/1.0.1 (7)
SpeedGrader
  • SpeedGrader
    • ex: SpeedGrader/226 (iPad; iOS 8.1.2; Scale/2.00)
Canvas Polls
  • polling
    • ex: polling/1.0 (iPhone; iOS 8.3; Scale/2.00)
MagicMarker (iOS Only)
  • MagicMarker
    • ex: MagicMarker/1.1 (iPhone; iOS 8.1.2; Scale/2.00)

Hope this helps.

Hello Leona,

One thing that you can do as well, is run the User Access Tokens report for one of your terms/sub accounts. (Settings-----> Reports ----->User Access Tokens)

When a user signs in to any of the Canvas mobile apps, it generates an access token that this report picks up.

This will give you an idea of how many people are signed in to the app at a given time.

It's more high level, but it's something.

This is an awesome tip. I think they just changed this recently to be accurate. Currently I have 2 access tokens for iOS (Canvas Student, Canvas Teacher), but 25 for Canvas for Android, yes 25, that date back to 2013. ( :
