Modules in app?

Jump to solution

I'm trying to familiarize myself with the Canvas app (ios) and it doesn't seem to show the modules? Is that right? Can I change that?

Yes, heather.edwards@scc.spokane.edu‌, students can access Modules from Canvas Student. Please refer to

How do I view Modules in the Student app on my iOS device?

and

https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-9777-18555199470

They will only see the Modules link if the instructor has enabled Modules in the course navigation (and that would have to be done by the instructor through the browser).

heather.edwards@scc.spokane.edu‌, at the moment, the Canvas Teacher App does not support modules—but please read Canvas Mobile Update to learn more about the mobile team's progress toward making that happen. Updates will be posted in  https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/10972-modules-tab-in-canvas-teacher-app , and you can follow that idea to receive those notifications.

Ahhh! So does that mean that the students' version does have it? That was my main concern...

Hi Heather -

Stefanie is right! Students can definitely see modules if the teacher established them when designing the course. The apps even display levels of indentations so the organization you see on the browser is represented neatly in their app. If you have any questions, feel free to ask!

What about the instructor app? All of the courses how are based around modules, but I don’t see modules in the iOS apps. Is this intentional? If so, why?

Hi James -

The Canvas Teacher was initially designed to give the essentials, the things teachers need often (and quickly!). Modules were definitely not forgotten, but the app was designed with the other features as a priority. I encourage you to add to the conversation at https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/10972-modules-tab-in-canvas-teacher-app" modifiedtitle="true" ...

Also, check out an update on Canvas Mobile apps from the Mobile PM, which includes the following about modules:

Teacher app doesn’t support modules today. We’re pretty close to being able to make this happen. Modules necessarily come last in development because almost every other kind of content in Canvas can be attached to a module (i.e., modules don’t do anything without assignments and pages and quizzes and links and files also being supported). Modules are also the way that many teachers interact with their course content, so getting to an assignment through the assignments list rather than through modules feels unnatural. Our first pass at modules will definitely not be adding support for building modules or modifying the structure of modules, as much as it will be viewing modules and module items. The basis for the teacher app’s success so far is its focus on course facilitation rather than course building or course structuring, and we’ll keep that theme going in however we incorporate modules.
