No reply area for my students to post to a discussion

I created a discussion, checked dates, checked that the discussion was for everyone in my course,  saved and published.  Students are inboxing me  saying they don't see an area to reply.  I see this area in the teacher view but when I go to student view, there is no way for them to reply.  I have no idea why.

Just to be clear, students cannot see the reply box that is described in these Guides?
