Posting an mp3 file as a reply to a discussion

I am a music teacher and was thinking of a creative way of using music to have students "check in." Many teachers are doing this with various emoji' that students are posting or clicking, etc. I want to upload a pool of mp3 audio clips that students can preview then add as a reply to a discussion. I've figured out how to control students' access to course files, and can get the mp3's uploaded however when I go to add one of those files to the discussion as a reply, it just downloads the file to my computer, rather than embedding it in the reply as I would expect. In fact it downloads both when I create the reply and when I leave student view and try to see the reply. The only way I can approach the expected result is to use the html editor and use the <audio> tag. That's just not practical. I'm using the new RCE, and the tool to insert/media/usermedia. What am I doing wrong?
